Analysis of landform conversion

Direct comparison of the input data to the IOER Monitor at diverse time points (processed ATKIS Basis-DLM) enables the unambiguous classification of changes in land use at the level of settlements. In this way we can quantify those forms of usage which are named when converting land for settlement and transport development. The method is based on a geometrical intersection while taking account of tolerances at object edges. In this way it is possible to prevent incorrect classifications due to the shifting of polygonal vertices which can occur through minor changes in position when data is updated (splitter polygons).

The indicators on consumption of new land are based on this method, and permit an estimate of the extent of converted land parcels.

Increase in settlement area and transport space

For the time period 2010-2015, this method reveals an increase of 1,774.5 km² in settlement area and transport space, primarily on land previously used for agriculture (81%) or areas of woodland and bushes (16%).

Loss of agricultural areas

The analysis reveals that the loss in agricultural areas can be attributed to other follow-on uses in addition to the creation of new settlement area and transport space (43%). Between 2010 and 2015, abandoned agricultural areas were newly mapped as areas of forest or bushes.
