Official municipality key (AGS)

The official municipality key (AGS), also known as the municipality code (GKZ), is an eight digit code that uniquely identifies politically autonomous municipalities or municipality-free areas in Germany. The AGS is issued by the statistical offices of the individual states and has the following structure:

  • The first two digits define the state.
  • The third digit indicates the (former) governmental district; otherwise this figure is zero.
  • The fourth and fifth digits indicate the district or cities with district status.
  • The final three digits designate municipalities lying with administrative districts.
Autonomous cities are designated by zero.

The AGS is the most important spatial key system used by the Monitor of Settlement and Open Space Development.
